With IID, sound is localized because of the difference of level between the left and right channels; users can manipulate the relative levels of left and right across an adjustable frequency range. With ITD, sound is localized using the difference in the arrival times of sounds coming from the left and right channels, so users alter the relative time arrival difference, also across an adjustable frequency range. Both processors are usable and adjustable separately or will function together.

As its name implies, Monofilter uses a filter algorithm to control stereo width and phase correlation in the spectrum area below the “higher up” localization frequencies. There is a choice of a zero latency filter, linear phase for the best quality but with slight processing delay, and HQ mode for high-definition but more CPU usage.

Phase issues in the low end of a mix can be caused by stereo mixing effects such as delays and choruses. Also, if samples have phase issues and are used in the production, phasing can be present in your mix as well. This can make the bass frequencies in your mix sound hollow or weak. To improve upon this, you can add Monofilter to your mix groups or effects returns, and use the phase control parameter to align the phase of the low frequencies in the left versus right channels.

In Pro Tools HDX 2021/4, I inserted Stereoizer on a finished mix track and set the upper and lower frequency bounds of the IID effect and left the ITD effect off. There is the adjustable resolution “wedge” for adjusting the effect’s density, and the focus parameter will constrain the range (or not) in which the IID algorithm operates.

These width controls range from completely mono at their minimum point, to completely unchanged at their maximum. The changes are clearly displayed in an easily intuitive stereo width envelope.

The Stereometer shows a hazy cloud histogram of instantaneous stereo positions displayed as a ghostly, apparitional panorama between the left/right extremes. Brighter bursts indicate the focus of stereo energy; this is especially visible with centered mono signals.

I set the transition “ramp up” or stereo width envelope from a HPF corner frequency below; stereo sound is constrained using the low-width control. From this “wide mono,” I set it to open all the way up to full stereo width; this can ramp up suddenly and instantly if you desire.

Then adjust the low frequency point and high frequency point to various settings, bypassing to compare - note how the bypassed signal sounds more phasey. Now use the mono and stereo monitoring options to listen as the frequencies are adjusted.

The Scope: Monofilter (click this link here now) is a stereo placement tool that allows the user to narrow certains parts of the frequency spectrum and how they are spread across the stereo field. On paper, that’s not a very new or exciting idea, but that quickly changes once you start playing around with Monofilter (see this here). On paper it also calls itself a “bass management” plugin, which it is, but I would say it is much more than that. First thing to note is the interface has a very intuitive layout that can be quickly understood. First there’s the horizontal axis controls which will work on the frequency level: rightmost control on the sets the highest operating frequency, middle control sets the lowest and the leftmost controls is a high-pass filter with fixed 12db/octave width. Then there’s the vertical axis which determines the stereo spread/narrow function, and this where NUGEN (https://vgtdecor.ru/hack/?patch=8995) came up with a clever implementation that allows the user to set the transitional range of the stereo narrowing/spreading. I can’t really recall any other plugin that allows this sort of processing and the closest thing that might resemble this are the multi-band implementation, which can’t cover this “transitional range” and will just set the stereo spreading across the frequency spectrum through cross-over points. Monofilter does something else entirely: you set the highest operating frequency and stereo spread with the right control and then narrow it down to the left towards mono. It’s important to say that there’s no extra stereo width here, with the max value being 100% for full “vanilla” stereo. Once you’re set with your spread and narrow frequency choices you can raise or lower mid and side signals, choose linear phase with a low end phase adjustment at the cost of some latency and some system load or pick minimum phase without the phase adjustment but without any latency or extra processing spent.
