With regard to other patches and demos, Aspyr's recently released patches include the final Civ IV Mac Rev A patch and a Tiger Woods 2005 Mac patch. Most likely, Aspyr's work goes under the radar because it isn't glamorous. It is hard to attract attention to these old ports when EA's Star Wars titles are so striking visually and so dominant in conversation. It's easy to look at these ports as curiosities. That's fair to do, especially when titles like Jedi Knight have aged so strangely. But, that doesn't take away from their importance or their charm. Nor does it undermine Aspyr's effort to do things such as integrate classic online multiplayer into Jedi Academy. Both from a Star Wars fan perspective and a gaming preservation perspective, Aspyr is doing important work.

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II has a fantasy-based version of this — albeit one that's All There in the Manual. The monsters you have to avoid being killed and eaten by are found on two different planets/moons: Sulon (a habitable moon of Sullust) and Ruusan, which are located in entirely different regions of the galaxy. Of course, it's possible that Jerec and his minions transported them from one location to another; but given that mailocs (gigantic wasps) and drugons (huge, man-eating fish) are both extremely dangerous and/or unwieldy, relocating them must not have been easy. Furthermore, the game also has Kumumgah (more famously known as Tusken Raiders or Sand People) turning up on Sulon, when any casual Star Wars fan could tell you that they are native to and only found on Tatooine. Of course, they are a (somewhat) intelligent species, but they're also nomadic herdsmen and warriors who wouldn't be likely to immigrate to another planet. Later games in the Dark Forces Saga would get better about this; particularly, Tusken Raiders only showed up one more time, on one of two Tatooine-set levels in Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.

Running the game in widescreen mode will cause the HUD, menus and aiming crosshair to appear horizontally stretched; the Elegance HUD is a good HUD for widescreen resolutions. Your arms may occasionally appear to be floating in midair when using the lightsaber or force powers in first-person view. For widescreen monitors, the Weapons High FoV Fix and Widescreen Crosshair mods are recommended. For high resolution monitors, the HD Icons and HD Fonts are recommended.


It’s rare for a weapon to be useless in three successive games, but the bowcaster has managed to be completely devoid of utility since the first Jedi Knight. The primary fire here can be charged to unleash a spread of five bolts, while the secondary fire will let loose a single bolt that will bounce off of surfaces. Unfortunately, given the power balance in Jedi Academy, the ability to fire around corners will be meaningless against grunt-level opponents, whom you can dispatch just as easily with a lightsaber, and will still be useless against Reborn, who will deflect the shot whether you’re visible or not.

At the end is a ledge with a lift on either side (and a Staff Reborn). JUMP up on that and use the switch; a crane will lift a crate which was blocking a door. Just watch out, because the Rancor can reach far enough to destroy the big crate up on this ledge.


Although hardly what you'd call a hardcore RPG, we reckon Knights Of The Old Republic has enough going for it to appeal to any PC game fan. Star Wars enthusiasts will be in hog heaven exploring the Star Wars prehistory, while the dialogue, storyline and sheer depth of the game will appeal to anyone pining for a good adventure. After playing Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy it's a difficult call to make which is better, but with a few minor tweaks we're confident that Knights on PC will be one of the very finest interactive experiences Star Wars has to offer.

I was able to get Academy to work fine. To play that one, I just needed to run the game in compatability mode for Windows XP. I attempted this for Outcast and it boots up to the main menu, but it is missing all text for new game, load, quit etc -even the spinning Jedi Knight symbol is missing. I was able to sort of get it to work with the text, but the spinny Jedi symbol was in the middle of the screen and clipping with the text, and as soon as I moved to interact with any option the game would crash. Also, everytime it crashes it SUPER screws up the color settings of my computer.

One does wonder how their system of backstabbing and "every man for himself" philosophy manages to outnumber and overwhelm the Jedi, who co-operate towards a common cause and don't kill half of their own people. It is mentioned that the Sith will always fail sooner or later because of this, but it's never actually shown in the game.

As a first and third-person shooter set in the Star Wars expanded universe, Jedi Academy puts the player into combat wielding a variety of firearms from that universe, as well as lightsabers and Force powers. Aspyr is no stranger to porting over classic Star Wars titles to the current generation of consoles. In Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, on the finale mission to Korriban, if you kill too many Jedi, they turn on you and try to kill you right along with the cultists, as having gone to The Dark Side in a non-standard fashion. The finale mission is a two-parter, and they only do it for whichever part it happens in, though. Also, the mission is still able to be completed. This mechanic makes it difficult under some mods, when you want to have realism turned on for the lightsabers fully.

The lack of a map or guidance system and occasionally confusing objectives only slightly mar the experience on an otherwise fantastic Star Wars romp. It's a fun and quick-paced game that's excellent in short bursts or extended play, and will have you returning time and time again.

The only bad news is that the game will be appearing on Xbox first, this autumn, with the PC version planned for the following spring (partly so as not to clash with the release of Galaxies). One of the few exceptions in Star Wars video games is found in Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, where the ending-deciding choice is made automatically based on your Karma Meter. Well, it's only in the first Knights of the Old Republic game that you get to become a student of the academy, and more importantly (at least for this mod), meet other students. Currently, all of the students of the academy wear those uniforms that Sith officers wear. It's a little odd, because they're not supposed to be just normal Sith officers, but Dark Jedi. Even the two masters of the academy, Uthar Wyn and Yuthura Ban, wear regular uniforms.

You won't have these taunting problems in multiplayer. Human players pose quite a challenge because tricks from the single-player game won't work. Even if you manage to throw someone off a ledge, you aren't rewarded for the kill. You must learn to fight with lightsabers and figure out stance counters. The dual sabers and saber staff provide more layers of depth in this type of combat. You still have different gameplay options, like using various conventional weapons, choosing lightsabers only, and adding bots. The way multiplayer works is that you have a limited number of points to distribute among all the Force powers, so you have to choose wisely. The deathmatch and capture the flag modes return from Jedi Knight II, and Jedi Academy adds two new modes: power duel is a two-on-one mode between Jedi and siege is the big, class-based team mode with objectives. For instance, in one mission, the Imperial side must complete six specific tasks to successfully capture the Hoth base. There are non-Force user classes that perform specific roles, like healing or demolitions.
